Understanding SMTP Welcome to the module entitled, "Understanding SMTP. " My name is Justin Harris. So what are we going to cover in this module? Well in this module, I'm going to lay the groundwork by talking about the common forms and methods of communication that we all use in our day-to-day lives. And this is really going to show the parallel of how electronic communication works under the covers. Then, I'm going to explain what the simple mail transport protocol, or SMTP, is, what the protocol does, and how it does it. As part of this discussion, I'm going to review the history of SMTP, and examine why it was invented in the first place, and what problem was it introduced to actually solve. Finally, we're going to look at SMTP in action, and I'm going to demonstrate how SMTP works by using telnet to send a simple email message.
